Challenge Cup

With Rangers flying high in the Premier Division and Flamborough performing inconsistently two leagues below, this should have been nothing short of a mis-match.

But on a cold and windy day near the cliffs
, Flamborough defied all odds and provided a huge shock.

On a tight compact pitch the majority of the opening exchanges were played in the heart of the midfield with both teams struggling to utilise their wide men.

However, on the half hour mark, Rangers took the lead after good build up play from Hopper and McKenzie resulted in the latter slotting home from 10 yards out.

The expectation was that Rangers would now go on to win by a hefty margin.

Flamborough however had other ideas and duly equalised when their striker squeezed a shot into the net from the tightest of angles.

The early stages of the second half saw Flamborough take control of the game albeit with the assistance of the gale force winds. The home team were rewarded for their efforts when a corner met by a Flamborough head was adjudged by the referee to have crossed the Rangers' goal-line.

Rangers got back on level terms courtesy of Sean Kirby who latched on to a through ball from substitute Robinson and finished clinically to make it 2-2.

The relentless Flambor-ough side hit back just minutes later when another dangerous corner was fumbled by keeper Woodcock and bundled into the Rangers' goal.

With Rangers now chasing the game they threw further bodies forward but failed to create any clear opportunities and the scoreline remained 3-2 in Flamborough's favour.

After the match manager Shaun Walker reflected: “Today's performance and result was hugely disappointing especially after a good start to the season.

“We have to treat it as a wake up call and take it on the chin.”
