A NEW archery club has been formed at Hutton Cranswick and they are already on the way up in a short space of time
The club started in October 2009, based at Hutton Cranswick sports ground and are represented on the committee of the HCSRA.

Rob Lilley, the club’s chairman and coach, said: “We have attained ERYCVS Level 1 and we are committed to developing best practices for developing the club and looking after its members, both junior and senior.

“The club is organised by a dedicated team of experienced archers including a GNAS level 1 coach with a second coach completing the coaching course at present.

“The membership is made up of all age groups from juniors to seniors both male and female.

“Archery is the ultimate family sport, where mums, dads, children and grandparents can all take part together.”

Two of the club’s juniors are currently part of the Yorkshire Development Squad.

So far the club has mainly funded itself with generous donations from within the club of over £500 and the donation of equipment.

The club has received funding from the parish council of £300 to enable the club to buy beginners’ equipment.

During winter the club shoots at Hutton Cranswick on Sunday mornings starting at 10am and during the summer this will be extended to week day evenings.

Rob added: “The club is committed to providing coaching at all levels and is offering one hour taster sessions for people who have never had a go before and would like to see what archery is like.”

The starting age for archers is 10-years-old but younger members may be taken at the discretion of the coach and committee.

A six-week beginners’ course covers the basics of archery and gives a person sufficient skills to join a club – all members must have completed a beginners’ course at a GNAS registered club before being able to join any club.

Further development coaching is available for both members and non members.

The club is organising an archery tournament on May 29 where they are expecting to attract archers from all over the north of England to the event.

Rob said: “To setup an archery club takes a lot of money to buy equipment and to make the sport safe, to expand the club and to get us to a point where we will become self sufficient. We are looking for local sponsors for the club and the tournament.”

The club forms part of Yorkshire Archery Association and is affiliated to the Northern counties Archery Association (NCAS) and the Grand National Archery Association which is the national governing body for archery.
