This weekend saw the exciting end of another cricket season for Rob Drury's Driffield U11s squad with two big finals in three days.
The first match was on Friday, August 29, with the 10 man squad playing in the Derwent Valley U11 league final playoff against Scarborough at Flixton, under floodlights.
After the recent bad run of bad weather thankfully it was a pleasant evening for this fine fixture.
Driffield captain, George Drury made the good decision to bat first after winning the toss and saw his side put on a substantial 101 runs for their 20 overs. Sound and consistent batting from George and team mates, Henry Harrison, Luke Clark, Richard Bannister and Reuben Kelly gave the team a solid base to start with when it came to their time in the field.
By this time the floodlights had come into play making the conditions more challenging for the Scarborough batsmen. Good eyes and wicket keeping from Scott Bristowe and tight bowling and fielding from Cieran Adamson, Nathan Saltmer, Danny Lomas and Harry Lomas kept the Scarborough side to a modest 48 runs from their 20 overs.
This saw Driffield claim their first major victory of the season to be crowned league champions. The whole game was played in a true sporting spirit by both teams – Well done to all.
On Sunday August 31, a slightly changed squad turn out for their second final at Cloughton against Pickering in the Derwent Valley Cup final.
With good weather and a beautiful location, and the boys still buzzing from their previous victory, they were hopeful of making it another win, but they knew Pickering would put on a good performance.
This time it was an 8 man line up and again Driffield were batting first. The ground conditions were slow in the outfield and this made it hard for the boys to reach the boundary on many occasions but with good running between the wickets and quick singles, the Driffield team managed to put on 70 runs for their 16 overs.
This was thought to be a small enough total for Pickering to chase but it wasn’t long before Driffield had the opposition on the back foot.
Tight bowling and keen fielding from the team including Danny Hammond and Andrew Rogers, plus some quick wicket keeping by Scott, saw the Driffield boys limit Pickering to just 40 runs by the end of their innings, to claim their second victory and become cup winners.
Congratulations to all the boys in the Driffield teams for the two matches, and all the other players who have turned out throughout the season. A great achievement for all, especially as this is two years in a row that the team has won the double! Many thanks also to Rob Drury and Rob Woodcock for their coaching this season and all their hard work and dedication. Thanks also to Anna for being so good with the score book! Good luck to the boys for next year and well done on such a fantastic end to the season.
