A DRIFFIELD veterinary surgeon had to be airlifted to hospital this week after being injured by a cow.
Holly Kitson, 24, who works at the Aldgate Veterinary Centre, in Albion Street, was carrying out a routine TB test at a farm in Flamborough Road, Bempton, on Tuesday when she was knocked unconscious by a cow.
A search and rescue helicopter was dra
fted in from RAF Leconfield to airlift Holly to Hull Royal Infirmary where she had to have a CT scan and stitches to a cut under her chin.
Holly told the Driffield Post that she cannot remember much of the incident itself but believes she has had a lucky escape.
"All I remember was waking up in hospital not knowing what day it was or where I was or what had happened," Holly said.
"My parents and boyfriend were at the hospital and they were alarmed when they heard I had been helicoptered away but I got off really lightly, they were just relieved."
"It just happened so quickly but I won't feel scared to get back into it," she added.
The CT scan revealed no lasting damage but she was kept in overnight before being allowed to return to her home on Bridlington Road, in Driffield to recover on Wednesday.
And she was back at work yesterday, Thursday, much to the relief of her colleagues.
Surgery partner Nick Jones said this is the first time he has encountered an incident like this and it was fortunate that Holly fell onto a heavily bedded yard rather than hard concrete.
"I have never come across someone being knocked by a cow but they are big stock animals and they are fairly bony about the head and if you just happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time sadly this is the outcome," Mr Jones said.
"Dealing with livestock is a dangerous past time for both us and the farmers who help us. As far as I know everyone was doing the best they possibly could," he added.
