DRIFFIELD councillor Symon Fraser has thrown his weight behind a campaign to create the biggest ever litter pick.
East Riding residents keen to Keep Britain Tidy are being given the chance to take part in the event.
The Big Tidy Up campaign is set to run throughout September and organisers Encams are hoping as many as 10,000 clean-ups throughout the UK will p
roduce more than 500,000 bags of litter - a fitting celebration of the 50th anniversary of the very first Litter Act.
Thousands of groups have already signed up for the month-long blitz on litter and East Riding of Yorkshire Council hopes people from within the area will join them.
Steve Brackenbury, the East Riding of Yorkshire Council's principal street-scene officer, said: "Keeping the East Riding tidy is something which boosts the quality of life of every resident and visitor to the region.
"The council is keen to support anyone who signs up for this initiative and will pick up any collected bags of litter on request.
"If anyone is keen to take part in litter-picks outside of this month, please do get in touch with the council as we will be happy to support you."
Those who sign up for the challenge will be given gloves and bags to help them in their work by Encams.
Coun Symon Fraser, portfolio holder for the environment, waste and recycling, is also backing the scheme.
He said: "We know how committed our East Riding residents are to all things environmental, we will do everything we can to help individuals and groups who want to be involved in this litter-pick initiative."

Those without internet access can use computers at any East Riding of Yorkshire library for free.
