The fascination of fossils at Beverley Treasure House
BUDDING geologists can find out more about interesting rocks and fascinating fossils at an event at the East Riding Treasure House, in Champney Road, Beverley, tomorrow (Saturday July 12).
Hull Geological Society will hold the roadshow in partnership with the East Riding Museums Service.
The society's experts will try to identify the rocks and fossils and tell people more about where and when they originated.
Curator Stefan Ramsden said: "We've all found fossils and rocks we are curious about on beaches, in fields and even in our gardens. This is a chance to find out how and when rocks were made, and what kinds of plants or animals fossils came from."
At various times over millions of years, parts of the East Riding were covered with a warm shallow sea, swept by glaciers and flooded by a lake.
The Holderness coast is a particularly good place to find fossils, brought here by glaciers from northern Britain and Europe, and has been called 'Ice Age coast' by some experts.
The roadshow will take place in the education room on the first floor of the Treasure House between 11am and 3pm.
Admission is free. There will be no valuations of specimens.
