CHILDREN in Sledmere now have the chance to shine, thanks to the opening of a new toddler group.
Sledmere Little Stars is now up and running at the new Foundation Unit at Sledmere CE Primary School offering weekly stay and play sessions for parents, grandparents, carers and under fives.
The group is run in partnership with the East Riding Children’s Centre, in Driffield and is led by Early Years practioners Wendy Eastwood, the community nurse, and Elaine Lee, the school’s nursery nurse.
Mrs Lee had previously worked with the East Riding’s peripatetic nursery, visiting Sledmere on a temporary basis, but now she will be based at the school permanently.
Head teacher, Sue Thackray, said: “The group is part of the school’s commitment to offering excellent early years education to local families.
“An excellent early years education is the lynchpin for success in future years. We hope that by attending the toddler group, children and families will become familiar with the school setting and staff, ensuring a positive transition into school when the time comes.”
The group’s first session was held on Thursday and proved to be a resounding success.
Mrs Thackray said: “The success of our first session with 18 children and 16 adults attending highlights the need for this facility in the area.”
Mrs Lee, who will be running the toddler group as well as working in the school’s newly built foundation unit, said she was delighted with the way parents and children joined in with the activities.
“It was wonderful to see so many parents sitting down and singing with their children at the end of the session,” said Mrs Lee.
